Our provision for pupils with special educational needs, and in
particular, those pupils who experience
mild/moderate learning difficulties, emotional,
physical or medical difficulties or those with
Statements of Special Educational Needs , is based
primarily on our commitment to provide them with a
broad, balanced, relevant and where appropriate,
differentiated education. Our strategies include the
following:-
-
develop all teachers' expertise
and confidence
-
early identification and
intervention, availing of the knowledge of
parents. primary school teachers and Health
Service and Education Board personnel
-
on-going assistance from
relevant and appropriate external agencies e.g.
Education Welfare Officer, Educational
Psychologist, Ethnic Minority and Diversity
Service, Counselling 4 Youth, Social Services,
Child and Family clinic etc, SELB Advisory and
Support Services e.g. Autism Advisory and at
School Service, Transition Coordinator etc
-
providing a happy, sensitive and
secure pastoral care environment which
complements effective learning
-
efficient diagnostic testing,
early intervention and the modification of
programmes of work to take account of the
results, paying heed to the recommendations of
Department of Education Supplementary Guidance
to the Code of Practice on the Identification
and Assessment of Special Educational Needs
-
using a variety of teaching
methods and strategies which will encourage
active, creative and independent learning e.g.
group work, support teaching, classroom and
domestic assistant support, Year 13 Peer
Tutoring, use of ICT, Reading Partnership
Programme, etc
-
ensuring that improvements and
achievements are recognised, recorded and
rewarded where appropriate.
Newry High School is committed to
delivering inclusive education for children with SEN
to meet the duties as they relate to SEN aspects of
the Special Educational Needs Disability Order 2005.
Pupils with Special Educational Needs are taught in
mainstream classes where every effort is made to
facilitate and enhance the teaching and learning
through planned use of additional, positive and
practical intervention strategies. Through these we
hope to create a supportive and disciplined
environment which will foster the individual growth
and development of caring, responsible young people.
